Under the auspices of the National Institute for Cancer Research (NICR), an elective course on New Directions in Morphological Research was held at the First Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University in recent weeks.
“The main mission of this activity was to introduce modern methods applicable in cutting-edge research with a focus on oncology to undergraduate medical students and potential candidates from Ph.D. programmes,” said Karel Smetana (Institute of Anatomy, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University) who is co-leader of the NICR´s research programme Biomarkers of Cancer Diseases and Cancer Diagnostics. Karel Smetana leads a research group that is a part of the NICR Prague node.
More than three dozen participants had the opportunity to learn, among other things, whether the increased incidence of cancer is a manifestation of the aging population, how cancer cells migrate, how tissue culture can be used for research and clinical purposes, or which genomic approaches are suitable for studying human diseases. Several experts from the Prague departments involved in the NICR also participated in the lectures.
