How understanding metabolism informs cancer progression
Changes in cell metabolism are necessary to support cell proliferation, and accumulating evidence suggests that cancer metabolic adaptations can also promote other epigenetic and genetic changes that contribute to cancer progression. How specific cancers use metabolism to support proliferation is influenced by factors in the tumor microenvironment, including nutrient availability, with nutrient availability in tissues differing from those found in blood. By examining how nutrients in different microenvironments affect cancer, we are gaining insights into how cancers adapt to grow in different environments and how this affects other relevant cancer phenotypes.
